Marinated Baked Tempeh

If you haven’t tried tempeh yet, you are missing out! I LOVE tempeh. I think it’s one of the most delicious plant-based proteins out there. It’s definitely one of the healthiest. The texture, the flavor (hello, marinade!), the incredible array of HEALTH BENEFITS. What’s not to love?!

Tempeh is rich in probiotics, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Want to learn more about this awesome fermented food? Check out this link.

Cooking tempeh is super easy. It just needs time to marinate, the longer the better. I also like to steam the tempeh before I marinate it. Steaming will remove any bitterness, make it tender, and help it soak up more flavor from the marinade.

Baked tempeh is a great addition to pretty much everything. Think buddha bowls, salads, roasted vegetables, stir-fry’s, spring rolls and so much more! My Fresh Spring Rolls with Tempeh and Peanut Sauce are a must try!

Marinated Baked Tempeh

Easy baked tempeh marinated in a flavor-packed sauce. Super healthy, protein-packed and so incredibly delicious! It’s the perfect addition to salads, buddha bowls and more.
Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 7 oz or 200 grams tempeh
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tsp coconut nectar or maple syrup

Instructions

  • Cut the tempeh into bite-size pieces.
  • Steam the tempeh for 10 minutes. This will remove any bitterness, make it tender, and help it soak up more flavor from the marinade.
  • Meanwhile, prepare the marinade. Add soy sauce, rice vinegar, orange juice and coconut nectar/maple syrup to a shallow dish or glass container. Whisk to combine.
  • Add steamed tempeh to the marinade and toss to coat. Cover and place in the fridge for at least an hour, preferably 24 hours (the longer, the better). Toss occasionally to make sure it’s evenly coated.
  • Once marinated, preheat the oven to 375 F or 190 C.
  • Grease a baking sheet with a little olive oil. Add tempeh and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, flip the tempeh squares, brush them with the remaining marinade, and bake for another 10 – 15 minutes. Until golden.
  • Serve with your favorite veggies and enjoy!
