Vegan Caramel Smoothie

If you love sweet breakfasts, but don’t want to start your day with a ton of sugar, then you are going to love this healthy and energizing Vegan Caramel Smoothie. It’s sweetened with bananas and dates (both high in fiber), so it has zero added sugar, yet it’s lush and decadent. Tastes like dessert.

I also added almond or peanut butter for creaminess and healthy fats, maca powder for an extra dose of nutrition, coconut yogurt (great for your gut) and carob powder. Carob powder tastes like toasted caramel and is what makes this smoothie special. Hope you don’t skip it. It has some incredible health benefits too. And for the record, it does not taste like chocolate. So, if you’ve tried it in the past as a chocolate substitute, chances are, you didn’t like it. Hope you give it another go. It’s truly delicious when you are not comparing it to cacao.

Vegan Caramel Smoothie

This healthy Vegan Caramel Smoothie is a lush and decadent drink that’s actually good for you; it’s the perfect way to start your day!
Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1 small banana, frozen*
  • ¼ cup Deglet Noor dates – or 3 big Medjool dates, pitted**
  • 1 Tbsp almond or peanut butter
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp carob powder
  • ½ tsp maca powder, optional
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • ½ cup unsweetened coconut yogurt – or more unsweetened almond milk

Instructions

  • If your dates are too firm, soak them in boiling water for 20 – 30 minutes. This will soften them. If you have a high-speed blender, you can skip this step.
  • Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

* Frozen bananas make creamy, delicious smoothies. Bananas need to be frozen for at least 8 hours. I like to keep a stash of frozen bananas in my freezer so I can make smoothies whenever I want (all the time, actually). Peel them, cut them in half, and store them in an airtight container. The riper the bananas, the tastier and sweeter the smoothie. Green bananas = bland smoothies.
** I love Medjool dates, they actually taste like caramel, but they can be pretty expensive. So, if you want to keep this smoothie budget-friendly, Deglet Noor dates (what you might know as regular dates) work great.
