How To Make A Healthy Green Smoothie

I’ve been starting my weekdays with a green smoothie and I love it. You don’t need to drink green smoothies to be healthy -the healthiest people on the planet never did- but I love smoothies and I think they are amazing if you want to add more fruits and veggies to your diet. Especially dark leafy greens. Do you know that you can always add a handful of spinach to your favorite smoothie and it won’t change the taste?!

Having a smoothie is one of the easiest ways to incorporate a good dose of leafy greens, omega-3-rich seeds (chia, flax or hemp) and berries into your diet. A smoothie can be packed with so many raw fruits and vegetables.

Here are a few of my favorite tips for making a HEALTHY green smoothie:

  • Aim for more veggies than fruits.
  • Add a banana or a Medjool date for sweetness, instead of using sugar or syrups.
  • Frozen fruits (like bananas, peaches or blueberries) make creamier smoothies.
  • Always add berries. So delicious, packed with antioxidants and extremely low in sugars.
  • Lots of leafy greens. I like to mix it up: kale, spinach, swiss chard, beet tops, pak choi. Start with a handful and gradually increase the amount.
  • Leafy greens are a must, but there are other great veggies that can go into a smoothie. Celery, cucumber, carrot or beet are all amazing. Next time you’re making a smoothie, try adding one of these and see how you feel.
  • A handful of herbs is not only delicious but will boost the nutrient content. My favorites are cilantro and mint. So refreshing!
  • Try incorporating chia, flax or hemp seeds. They are packed with plant-based protein and good fats (hello omega 3’s).
  • Lemon juice and orange zest are always nice additions. I’m a huge fan of citrus fruits!
  • I love adding fresh ginger. So tasty and so good for your digestion.
  • I also like adding other foods like Camu Camu (packed with antioxidants! It’s the fruit with the second highest content of vitamin C in the world), Spirulina, Maca or Ashwagandha.
  • Finally, start small. Start with a handful of greens, one small veggie or a few herbs, and work your way up. Your taste buds will adapt with time!

My Good For You Smoothie is a great way to start. It’s delicious, refreshing and full of the good stuff.

Hope these tips help!
